Your skin tone has been passed down to you from generation to generation. But what you might not immediately realize is that the color of your skin determines more than whether you turn into a lobster in the sun or what box you check on the census. Not to blind you with science (insert funny ’80s quip here) or anything, but the amount and type of melanin you have — a natural substance which gives your skin, hair and eyes their color — not only dictates which makeup colors work best on you, but also what shade of hair color is most flattering. Scroll down to take the quiz and find out what hair color hue you should wear. Your most beautiful hair color will bring out the subtleties of your skin tone and enhance its natural beauty. Knowing this, we went to celebrity colorist Beth Minardi, who has colored the heads of celebs including Kirsten Dunst, Cameron Diaz and Brad Pitt, to find out exactly which shades of hair color work best on various skin tones. Minardi says that “skin tone is extremely important and serves as a guide for the colorist,” and generally a good rule of thumb when it comes to picking shades is, if you have cool-toned skin, your color should also be cool in tone and vice versa. If you have warm-toned skin, you should opt for a warmer-toned hair color. Before starting the quiz below to determine which skin tone you have and thus which hair colors will look best on you, check out these quick at-home hair coloring tips: * For the most foolproof and flawless finish, always choose a box that’s within two shades lighter or darker than your current color. * To keep hair healthy, apply color to unwashed hair. The natural oils work to protect your hair from damaging product. * If you want to use a semi-permanent color, know that you can only go darker or hide grays. Semi-permanent hues won’t lighten hair. * There is a specified time for leaving the dye on your hair for a reason. Obey it or you could end up with two-toned strands. * If you make a color mistake, don’t try and fix it with another box of hair color. If it is a minor mishap, wash it two to three times consecutively with clarifying shampoo. If it’s a biggie, bite the bullet and see a professional. Image via Pinterest

Black hair can look stunning when done right, but if you are looking for a natural black use a dark brown shade instead. People often make the mistake of thinking black hair colour is natural, but when we talk about black hair dye, true jet black dye doesn’t look natural. The worst mistake you can make is to use the wrong shade, expecting a natural look and ending up looking like a Tim Burton character. Or, even worse, expecting to look like a Tim Burton character and ending up with a Kim Kardashian shade.

This is my favourite of the semi’s for a black hair dye. Adore also has ‘Off Black’, ‘Jet Black’ and ‘Blue Black’, so lot’s of tone options. It’s great value for money, and the constancy is runny, so a little spreads a long way. Perfect for those with thick hair and for easy full head application. The colours last very well, I’d say 6-7 weeks. Available worldwide.

“Once you go black, you don’t go back” Permanent black hair dye is the WORST to remove or change. Although it can be changed, your colour options would be extremely limited, and the condition of your hair will be compromised. I know there are some people, even hairdressers who will tell you it’s possible to go from black to blonde, (and i’m not saying it’s impossible), but the hair will feel fried, and need lots cut off to get rid of the damage.

Great article! But I wanted to add (or warn!) that Manic Panic’s Raven is a GREEN black (it dries dark moldy green). I put this color over my porous platinum blonde hair and I ended up looking like The Joker! I gave it another try on my friend’s dark brown hair, and her hair turned a natural shade of black, but in the light it had a very obvious dark green tint. I love Manic Panic for it’s easy to use formula and very pigmented colors, but I wish they would come out with a TRUE black dye.

If you are naturally blonde, remember you will have your natural root colour showing through very obviously after even just 3-4 weeks. This is a high maintenance colour for the naturally blonde. Also the demi dye’s will fade/lighten, but WON’T fade back to your natural colour. If you get fed up of the high maintenance black and decide you want to be natural blonde again it will be a big day in the salon and will be costly, both to your hair and your wallet. Please consider this before you dye.

This is something you should consider… are you ready for the “till it grows-out” commitment that comes with dyeing your hair black? If so, great, go with permanent. But if you think you might like to play around with you hair colour in future stick with a semi or demi permanent black dye. At least it is a little less work to pull out when you change your mind.

CONDITION: Keep the condition of your hair healthy as possible. Black hair can look dull, and lack shine if the hair is dry. Keep the hair well cut, any split ends will stand out like a sore thumb on black hair. Avoid straightening irons/high heat styling.

7 Of 11 Keeping Color-Treated Hair Healthy If you’ve lightened your hair in the past, going deeper than two shades is difficult to do yourself. “If hair has been previously lightened, the warm orange, yellow, and red tones have been removed. When you add a darker color, the cool tones will be more obvious and you’ll end up with green- or gray-looking hair,” warns Backe. To soften the inevitable damage from color-correcting over-processed hair, protect your tresses in between treatments with a recovery hair mask that’s filled with nourishing natural oils.Neutrogena Triple Moisture Deep Recovery Hair Mask, $17; amazon.com.

Remember: The higher the peroxide level, the more permanent the colour becomes. The highest level peroxide I would suggest for a demi permanent dye would be 15vol. The L’Oréal Professionnel Richesse I recommend is a professional only colour, so if you are not a hairdresser you may have to go to a L’Oréal salon to request this colour. I would recommend shade level 3/3n (Natural level 3 Darkest Brown) for a natural looking black and shade level 1/1n (Natural level 1 Black) for a more gothic/un-natural black. (Click here to see the L’Oréal Professionnel Richesse colour chart)

If you are naturally blonde, dark blonde or have bleached blonde hair you will need to use the peroxide based demi black hair dye. If you were to use the peroxide free dyes (Manic Panic/Adore/Directions…etc.), it may look ok at first, but after a few washes the colour would look dull and grey/blue. After a few weeks it will look grey/blue (if applied over bleached blonde) and muddy green (if applied over naturally blonde or gold blondes).
